Nurofen: Thing You Should Know

How much codeine is in Nurofen Plus?

Each Nurofen Plus tablet contains 12.8 mg of codeine. In the pack of 32 tablets, the total amount of codeine would therefore be 409.6 mg (12.8 mg per tablet multiplied by 32 tablets).

DO NOT take more than 8 tablets in any 24 hours.

How long does Nurofen Plus stay in your system?

The duration that Nurofen Plus stays in your system depends on both its individual components — ibuprofen and codeine — as they each have different elimination rates.

Ibuprofen typically has a half-life of about 2 to 4 hours. This means that after this amount of time, half of the drug has been cleared from your system. It usually takes about 5 half-lives for a drug to be eliminated completely, so ibuprofen will typically be out of your system in 10 to 20 hours after the last dose.

Codeine has a longer half-life, usually ranging from 3 to 4 hours, but it can vary based on individual factors like metabolism and liver function. However, codeine is metabolised in the liver to morphine, which has a much longer half-life. In general, codeine itself can stay in your system for about 24 to 36 hours. However, the effects of codeine will wear off much sooner, typically within 4 to 6 hours after ingestion.

The duration can be influenced by other several factors, such as your age, health, liver function, kidney function, and dosage. If you've taken multiple doses over time or have a slower metabolism, it may take longer for both ibuprofen and codeine to leave your system.

If you're concerned about how long it will stay in your system, or if you're taking it regularly, it might be a good idea to consult a healthcare professional, especially if you’re worried about side effects, dependency, or drug testing.

Can I take Nurofen Plus and paracetamol?

Yes, you can generally take Nurofen Plus and paracetamol together, as long as you follow the recommended dosages for both medications. These two medications work in different ways, so combining them can sometimes provide better pain relief.

Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), while paracetamol is an analgesic that helps reduce pain and fever. Codeine, the opioid in Nurofen Plus, works by altering how the brain processes pain.

However, there are a few important things to consider. Avoid exceeding the maximum dose: Both Nurofen Plus and paracetamol have dosage limits. When combining them, you need to ensure you're not taking too much of either one.

Be cautious with codeine as it can cause drowsiness, constipation, and other side effects. Taking it with paracetamol may increase the overall effect of pain relief, but it also means you're more likely to experience these side effects. It's important to be mindful of how your body reacts.

If you have any conditions that affect your liver, kidneys, or stomach (such as ulcers), combining these medications may not be advisable. For example, both ibuprofen and paracetamol are processed by the liver, so taking them together frequently can put strain on the liver. Additionally, ibuprofen can irritate the stomach lining.

Combining Nurofen Plus and paracetamol is typically safe for short-term use (e.g., for managing acute pain). If you find yourself needing to combine these medications regularly, it's a good idea to speak with a healthcare provider to ensure it's safe and appropriate for your situation.

If you’re unsure about the best approach for managing your pain, or if you're planning to use these medications together regularly, it's always wise to consult a healthcare professional.

Can you take Nurofen Plus when pregnant or breastfeeding?

Nurofen Plus is generally not recommended during pregnancy, especially in the later stages (after 20 weeks). The ibuprofen in it can cause problems for the baby, such as reducing amniotic fluid or affecting the baby’s heart. Codeine can also pose risks, like premature birth or withdrawal symptoms for the baby after birth. Always talk to your doctor before taking any medication during pregnancy.

When breastfeeding, ibuprofen is usually considered safe in small doses, but codeine is not. Codeine can pass into breast milk and cause serious issues for your baby, like excessive sleepiness or difficulty breathing. It’s best to avoid Nurofen Plus while breastfeeding and speak with your doctor about safer pain relief options.

Can you drink alcohol with Nurofen Plus?

It’s not recommended to drink alcohol while taking Nurofen Plus. The combination of ibuprofen and codeine with alcohol can increase the risk of serious side effects.

Ibuprofen can irritate your stomach and increase the risk of ulcers or bleeding, and drinking alcohol can make this worse. Codeine, being an opioid, can cause drowsiness, dizziness, and impaired coordination, and alcohol can intensify these effects. This can lead to dangerous levels of sedation or even respiratory depression, which can be life-threatening.

For your safety, it’s best to avoid alcohol while using Nurofen Plus. If you have any concerns or need advice on pain relief, it’s always a good idea to consult a healthcare professional.
