General information

What are soluble pain relief tablets?

Soluble pain relief tablets are a tablet format designed to be dissolved in water before being consumed. Some people prefer soluble formats because they can feel easier to swallow than standard tablets, and they can be convenient when a drink is already to hand.

What does a “combination” pain relief medicine mean?

A combination pain relief medicine contains more than one active ingredient. Combination products are commonly used when a single-ingredient option has not been enough for someone, but the suitability of any particular combination depends on the person and their circumstances.

What kinds of pain are OTC pain relief medicines commonly used for?

Over-the-counter pain relief medicines are commonly used for everyday, short-term aches and pains such as headaches, dental discomfort, backache, muscular aches, period pain, and cold or flu-related aches. Different products are intended for different situations, so packaging information is important.

What does “pharmacy-only” (P) medicine mean?

In the UK, “pharmacy-only” (P) medicines are sold under a pharmacist’s supervision. This usually means some checks are made to help ensure the medicine is appropriate for the individual and that it is being supplied responsibly.

Why do online pharmacies ask questions before supplying some medicines?

For certain medicines, pharmacies may ask about the person who will use the product and the reason it is being considered. These questions support safe supply, help identify potential suitability issues, and ensure the product is being requested for an appropriate purpose.

What’s the difference between soluble tablets and standard tablets?

The main difference is the format. Soluble tablets are intended to be dissolved in water, while standard tablets are usually swallowed. Some products also differ in taste, speed of preparation, and portability, but the key details vary by brand and product.

What information is worth checking on the outer packaging?

Outer packaging typically includes the product name, active ingredients, strength, pack size, key safety information, and an expiry date. This information helps people identify the right product for their needs and avoid accidental duplication with other medicines that contain the same ingredients.

How should medicines generally be stored at home?

Many medicines are stored in a cool, dry place, away from excess heat, moisture, and direct sunlight, and out of sight and reach of children. Storage advice can vary by product, so the packaging information is the best place to check.

Why is it important to read the label and any leaflet provided?

Labels and leaflets contain the manufacturer’s product-specific information, including how the product is intended to be used and important safety details. Reading them helps people make informed choices and reduces the risk of misunderstanding a medicine’s purpose or limitations.

When might someone consider speaking to a pharmacist or another healthcare professional?

Some people choose to seek professional advice when symptoms are persistent, recur frequently, feel unusual, or when there is uncertainty about whether a medicine is suitable alongside existing conditions or other treatments. A pharmacist can also help with general options and signposting to further care when needed.
